Woman thinking about various words should could choose to guide her towards her goals in the New Year.

What if one word could help you direct your energy and accomplish your goals? It might sound too good to be true, but choosing a word of the year is a way to live intentionally and achieve your goals.

New Year’s Resolutions and ADHD

New year’s resolutions, like goals, can feel performance based, giving us a sense of pass or fail. They can feel overwhelming and pressured. As we all know, people with ADHD have attention but it frequently shifts. A word of the year will keep our focus directed in areas that matter to us as well as support us in actually reaching our goals.

Choose a Word of the Year Instead

Creating an overarching intention for the year is simple and focusing. It can apply to any area of life where you would like to see change. Thinking about one word instead of multiple individual goals is simple, positive and motivating.

A word is a theme for the upcoming year. It is energizing and it gives clarity and direction.

How do you choose it?

Brainstorm various areas of life in which you would like to see change. It could be areas where you have struggled in the past year. Is there a common theme that runs through your list? Is there any word that comes to mind as you read through it?

A word of the year can be anything you think of, but here are a few examples:

  • Metamorphosis

  • Rise

  • Simplify

  • Compassion

  • Calm

  • Fulfillment

  • Momentum

  • Learn

  • Grow

  • Move

  • Now

Give yourself a few days to ponder your word to see if it is a good fit. If you've found the right one, you will feel a sense of clarity and motivation. This one word will support you in moving forward and will subconsciously direct your choices over the upcoming year.

Your Word Brings Focus

Keep your word front and center so that you can see it each day. If you are asked to do something that doesn’t feel like a good fit, run it against your word to see if it is something that you want to say yes to. It is uncanny how many changes you will see over the year due to the focusing power of a word that resonates and is personal to you!
